Beer for Brains RAREaffair List of Brews

With November 5th right around the corner, the Beer for Brains Foundation’s RAREaffair is fast approaching and all the delicious rare beers that come with it will be ready for an evening of hearty indulging, all for charity, of course.  On top of the small listing on the RAREaffair page, a partial beer list for all attendees (general admission and VIP) has been released, as well as an incomplete list for just those who purchased VIP tickets.  Tickets are still available to purchase, with general admission costing $75.00, VIP priced at $175.00, and designated driver selling for $30.00.  Other than the extra rare craft brews, wines and spirits, and select cigars that will be available to VIP ticket holders, they are also being welcomed into the event an hour earlier (5:30pm), will have access to an exclusive VIP area, be provided with full dinner and desserts catered by Talking Stick Resort, and receive a BFBF handmade stoneware stein.  Alongside all of the physical attributes and fantastic perks that make up the more expensive of the ticket selections, knowing that the proceeds from this event will benefit the Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center at Barrow Neurological Institute is what makes it all worth it.

The following list includes beer for the general admission guests as well as those that are available only to VIP patrons.  Not all beers that will be available are included here, and more may be added up until the day of the event, so be prepared for some surprises!

**all brews exclusive to VIP are noted with two asterisks

Papago Brewing Company
Belle Époque
Grisette (“little gray”) was served to miners. Although the style died out, they were described as small, refreshing blonde ales that probably lacked the lactic sourness that sometimes characterized their close cousin, saisons. In fact, what we brewed was more in keeping with farmhouse ales. We were aiming for a rusticity of malt and oats but a characterful beer that would come from using a Belgian yeast strain.

Laurie’s Sparkle
A blend of Papago’s Belle Époque and Redstone Meadery’s Nectar of the Hops created in honor of Laurie Dolgoff, the sparkle behind the Beer for Brains Foundation

Sonoran Brewing Company
Sonoran Pumpkin Spice
A rare seasonal (with only 170 gallons brewed) that is perfect for fall; 6% ABV, brewed with 80 lbs of pure pumpkin, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg

Short’s Brewing Company
Pandemonium Pale Ale
This coppered colored American pale ale lends its hue to hearty two row malts and hand selected specialty grains. Hop additions balance the wort, resulting in a tasty union of flavors and earthy aromas. Behold the bitter hysteria!

Bellaire Brown
A full flavored brown ale that derives sweet caramel and toasted qualities from four different kinds of malt and specialty grains. Select hop varieties add enticing aroma to the nose and create a dry finish. This ale is so dark and rich, it’s hardly classifiable as brown, but is certainly considered a delicious masterpiece.

Nicie Spicie
A Northern Michigan spiced wheat ale made with a 50/50 blend of malted barley and malted white wheat. Packed with fresh citrus zest, then spiced with coriander and a three peppercorn blend, this light bodied ale is complex yet scrumptious. Exemplified by its gorgeous golden color, this beer is crisp and refreshing.

Autumn Ale
A London Extra Special Bitter (ESB) that is true to style. It has a medium body, amber color, and full flavor. This beer exhibits a wonderful balance of initial malty sweetness with subtle lingering floral hop bitterness, resulting in an ideal bridge between malty and hoppy beer styles. It is a silver medal winner at the 2006 GABF.

This gem is honored with the name of the hop plant, Humulus lupulus, and is Short’s best selling India Pale Ale. It has such an abundant amount of hops that it sensually provides a punch to the palate. The numerous hop varieties used in its creation render a delicious bitter taste and enticing citrus aroma. The hearty malt bill melds with the hops to create a perfect balance.

Allagash Brewing Company
Our interpretation of a traditional Belgian wheat beer. Brewed with a generous portion of wheat and spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel, this beer is fruity, refreshing and slightly cloudy in appearance.

A. Le Coq
Imperial Stout (2003)
“A. Le Coq Imperial Extra Double Stout is a towering achievement, on the same level as a great old Barolo or vintage port. It makes a mind-boggling match with venison in sour cherry sauce and is a fine accompaniment to game sausages, particularly wild boar… As for cigars, only the finest, strongest Cubans will do, unless you have an Arturo Fuente Opus X. In that case, I’ll be right over.” -Garrett Oliver, The Brewmaster’s Table, p.151
The style “Imperial Russian Stout” and the name “Albert Le Coq” are synonymous. In the early 1800’s the Belgian A. Le Coq exported Imperial Stout from England to Russia and the Baltic area. After the import traffics increased dramatically in the early 1900’s A. Le Coq was invited by the Tsarist government to brew his legendary Imperial Extra Double Stout within the Russian Empire. In 1912 the first Imperial Extra Double Stout left the Brewery in Tartu, the former province of Livonia, now Estonia. The Russian Revolution and World War I, however, brought a dramatic end to A. Le Coq’s venture. His brewery was nationalized by the Bolshevik government in 1917 and production ceased. The original recipe on each bottle of Imperial Extra Double Stout pay hommage to A. Le Coq without whom this classic style would never had reached its legendary place in the world of beers.

Yule Smith (winter 2010)
For the winter season, Yule Smith is brewed as an Imperial Red Ale. This version is maltier, more balanced, and darker in color than the summer version. Although quite malty, big hop flavors and aromas are abundant making this an unforgettable winter warmer.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company
Boontlinger Weiss
Boontlinger Weiss has a split personality. Originally brewed solely for the purpose of barrel aging and souring, we tasted the beer before it was to be racked into barrels, we agreed that it had real promise as a Bahl Hornin’ beer. That’s what can be so fun about brewing, sometimes you just decide to go for it and see what would come out. And for the homebrewers out there – this beer is 40% wheat malt and, no, we don’t use rice hulls. Boontlinger Weiss is a light, refreshing wheat beer with a twist: a special belgian yeast adds the complexity and balance that are the hallmark of Anderson Valley Beers. Inspired by German Weissbier, this light golden ale has hints of tropical fruit and banana, and a cool, clean finish.

BJ’s Restaurant and Brewery
Goliath Double Red

Cascadian Dark Ale IPA
It’s a Black IPA! This beer has an intense hoppy bitterness combined with a slight dark chocolate from the use of roasted wheat malt. CDA is generously hopped with Summit and Cascade Hops for a distinct 1-2 hop punch.

Eel River Brewing Company
Raven’s Eye Imperial Stout (2009)
A rich roasty brew with a deep “espresso” character. Originally brewed for the Imperial Court in Russia, this stout is a warm festive drink made with the cold Russian Winters in mind. This complex stout is brewed with a combination of nine domestic and imported malts. Only the finest Pacific Northwest hops are used to provide the perfect balance in our award winning beer.

Full Sail Brewing
Black Gold Bourbon Imperial Stout
A hearty brew that is black as night with a strong roasted malt character and a full body. After its initial release in January 2010, our Imperial Stout was aged for a full year in Bourbon casks from Kentucky. This extended aging presents hints vanilla and oak. This, combined with the robust character of the Imperial Stout make for a smooth, wonderful taste experience. A hearty cellar beer. Very limited availability.

Sanctuary Belgian Style Dubbel
Rich malt aromas fill the nose. Flavors of biscuit and roast are rounded by a rich sweet malt character. This Dubbel is lightly hopped and finishes with Belgian yeast spice notes and a chewy finish.

Brasserie de Silly S.A. – Donated by Global Beer Network
Silly Saison
-In place of Gulden Draak Quad-
Silly is one of the few Saison brewers that still stores a first batch of the top fermenting beer for about a year, and then blends the old beer with a fresh brewed batch. From this batch part is again stored away for a year. Indeed, brewing Saison is a seasonal artwork performed only once a year. The resulting beer is a balancing act, only mastered by the brewer who tries to get every year the same color, aroma and taste in his Saison. He, Mr. Van der Haegen himself, balances sweetness, bitterness and sourness (from the old beer) into a fabulous copper brown colored beer of about 5.2 % alcohol by volume.

Great Divide
Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout
Welcome to the newest incarnation of our revered imperial stout. We toned down the hops a bit to allow cocoa nibs to contribute some pleasing bitterness, while vanilla notes from the oak combine with the cocoa to create an aroma and flavor akin to a gourmet chocolate bar. A dash of cayenne keeps things lively, adding just a bit of heat to the finish. A Yeti for summer? Hell yes. 9.5% ABV.

Ise Kadoya
Genmai Ale
Based on our award-winnning Pale Ale recipe, our brewmaster Nakanishi took it to another level and added “arare”—roasted brown rice to create a truly innovative and thoroughly Japanse-style beer. The resulting “genmai” flavored ale gives a refreshingly crisp hoppy flavor and a bitter finish. This recipe even made some Japanese microbrewers stand up and take notice—a true rarity even in Japan.

J.W. Lees

Ovila Saison
For centuries, the monastic tradition has followed the rule of St. Benedict – Ora et Labora (prayer and work). This saison farmhouse ale is in honor of the noble labor in which the monks engage. Hazy blonde in color, these rustic ales are designed to be complex and contemplative but also refreshing and drinkable after a day in the fields. With earthy and spicy aromas this Saison has notes of green grass, and a faint citrus tang. The body is light and layered with fruit and spice accents and a dry, peppery, and refreshing finish. Released June 2011.
