Sand Creek Oscar's Chocolate Oatmeal Stout

My friend Matt and I recently toured Sand Creek Brewery, located in Black River Falls. The brewery offers an impressive selection, despite being a relatively small brewery, offering twelve different styles, including seasonals, from the lightest of ales to an intense IPA. One of the darkest of beers Sand Creek offers is the Oscar’s Chocolate Oatmeal Stout.

This isn’t a beer for the t-shirt and shorts we could wear a few weeks ago. Nor will you find this beer in the fridge of those new to the world of beer. In fact, a few friends who have enjoyed beer for years tasted it and shook their head in dislike. Well, nobody is perfect. Some people don’t know a good beer when it hits them in the mouth.

And this is a good beer.

The Oscar’s is a thicker beer with a lot of flavor that hits you and lingers. If a bag of dark chocolate covered roasted coffee beans were made into a beer, this would come close to that beer. It lacks much bitterness, but instead has a subtle sweetness during the finish.

There is a level of complexity of flavors during the drinking experience. As you reach the bottom of the glass, different flavors and aromas become apparent, becoming more chocolaty and sweet.

This stout is a great dessert beer to end your night, and you can enjoy the beer for a significant amount of time, sipping slowly during good conversation. It is an easy replacement for a bowl of ice cream or a piece of cake at the end of a meal. The fullness and flavors of the stout embodies a calm, cool night, a warm fire, cozy sweaters, and overstuffed armchairs.
